SmackDown Sampler: Enter the Goldberg Era

Friday Night SmackDown is live from Boston, and with the fallout from an… interesting event from Saudi Arabia yesterday, it’s likely to be one hell of a night.

Here is a preview for the event from the TD Garden.

Well… Super ShowDown happened. And in what many perceive was typical booking fashion for these Saudi shows, the show was bookended with stars from two decades earning victories. The Undertaker made a surprise appearance as the final wrestler in the gauntlet match for the Tuwaiq Trophy, defeating AJ Styles with what might’ve been the weakest looking chokeslam in the illustrious career of “The Phenom.”

But as far as tonight’s episode of SmackDown is concerned, the new Universal Champion Goldberg is scheduled to be attendance. In what many were hoping would simply be another trophy for “The Fiend” and his picture wall, furthering his push as the unbeatable reigning Universal Championship, the main event ended unexpectedly. Instead, it turned out to be an abrupt end to a great championship reign, and another title run for Goldberg. It’s disheartening, but the Bray Wyatt was still booked relatively strong, even in a loss. He was quickly back on his feet, and was not easily put down by the Goldberg, so though the finish wasn’t ideal, it doesn’t appear that “The Fiend” character has been buried. It will be interesting to see where they go with Goldberg and the Universal Championship heading into WrestleMania; does “The Fiend” get a rematch, and they have him chase the gold? Or does someone else step up to challenge to the title?

Perhaps lost in all the rage over the booking decision for the Universal Championship, John Cena will be making his long-awaited return to WWE. Is he returning to start a feud heading into WrestleMania— rumours are that perhaps it’ll be Roman Reigns— or just simply to make an appearance and shill one of his latest films?

It all goes down live tonight at 8pm EST on FOX.
