Two legendary returns and a #1 Contender’s match highlight tonight’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, live from the SAP Center in San Jose, CA.
Here’s a rundown of what to expect on tonight’s episode.
The first of two major returns (you, reader, can decide later which is bigger), Bill Goldberg returns for the first time since the poorly received match against The Undertaker at Super ShowDown in June of last year. Is he returning to enter into another feud, in an effort to redeem that match, and enter retirement again on a higher note?
Hopefully we do find out, “Who’s Next.”
The reigning and defending Universal Champion, “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt, returns for the first time since his successful title defense against Daniel Bryan in that hellish Strap Match at Royal Rumble. Well, we’re promised a “Firefly Funhouse” segment, so it’s just Bray Wyatt we’re getting. Is this to set up the next feud for the champion, or continue the program with Daniel Bryan? Now that the awful, dog food-centric, program with King Corbin is (hopefully) over, perhaps we get the set-up for a Roman Reigns feud?
Fatal Four-way #1 Contender’s Match
Carmella, Dana Brooke, Naomi, and “The Goddess” Alexa Bliss are set to do battle to determine the #1 Contender for Bayley’s SmackDown Championship. An actual #1 Contender’s match is always preferred over just a feud for the top belt just starting out of seemingly nowhere, but the whole thing loses a bit of its juice when one of the competitors had a one-on-one confrontation with the champion just a week prior. They did this same thing with The Miz & Morrison last week when they had to earn their title match against The New Day, after they had been feuding with Kofi Kingston and Big E for weeks before.
All this is to say is that after interrupting Bayley last week, getting physical with her, and coming off of her return at Royal Rumble, it would seem strange not to have Naomi go over here, although there should always be hope that Alexa Bliss wins every single match that she’s in…
The Dirt Sheet Returns
Speaking of the aforementioned #1 Contenders for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, The Miz & John Morrison are bringing back their Dirt Sheet, the segment that go them over as a heel team nearly ten years ago. When it first existed, this segment was wholly original, being written and produced by Morrison and Miz, so it’ll be interesting to see if the two are given the same creative freedom here as this is obviously going to be used as a heat magnet as they undoubtedly use it as a vehicle to insult Kingston and Big E.
So which is the bigger return: The Dirt Sheet or Goldberg…?
Another “New” Daniel Bryan?
And finally, Daniel Bryan also returns to SmackDown after the gruelling match with Wyatt at Royal Rumble. We’re sure to find out where Bryan goes from here, after failing twice to win the Universal Championship from “The Fiend,” and whether if he has been “changed,” just as everyone else has who has fallen to the defending champion. Are we to get a retirement tease sort of angle, only to be confronted and talked off the ledge by a plucky young talent wanting to get in the ring with “The American Dragon”? Are, perhaps, the Bryan segment and the Goldberg return, linked…?
It all goes down tonight at 8pm EST live on FOX!
