Mr. Nick’s Notes: SmackDown 1/17/2020

Royal Rumble quickly approaches and it’s time for SmackDown to get serious.

The show starts off with KANE!

Kane cutting a promo is still odd to me. I was always used to him walking to the ring and destroying everyone in sight.

Uh oh, Bray Wyatt interrupts Kane from the Fun House. Bray reminds everyone of the rivalry he shares with Kane over the years.

The the lights go down…

The Fiend tries to scare Kane, but Kane just asks him what took him so long.

Then Daniel Bryan attacks The Fiend with the running knee. Then The Fiend escapes under the ring and disappeared.

Team Hell No reunion!

Pretty cool start to SmackDown.

Backstage:Daniel Bryan is sick of Bray running away from him so he challenges Bray Wyatt to a Strap Match at the Royal Rumble for the Universal Championship.

Match #1: Singles Match
SmackDown Tag Team Champions Big E w/Kofi Kingston v John Morrison w/The Miz

This is the first match for John Morrison in WWE in 8 years.

I just spent the whole match explaining to my wife who John Morrison is and what his whole gimmick is about. Now we have to listen to some Doors this weekend.

Time for Big E to get that singles push.

Match End: John Morrison pins Big E after some Miz distractions and Morrison’s corkscrew top rope finisher.

Recap of the Robert Roode/Roman Reigns feud (RRvRR).

Backstage:The Usos and Roman Reigns are in a smokey area (fitting) as they set up their tag match.

Match #2: Tag Team Match
The Usos v The Revival

These two teams could revitalize the tag team division in WWE if done right…what if…

Match End: The Usos get the win after a decent match

Backstage:The Revival are frustrated at the company not caring about the Tag Team Division.
The camera has to cut to a brawl between Lacey Evans/Bayley/Sasha Banks. It’s implyed that Sasha was hurt.

Recap of the budding romance between Otis and Mandy Rose aka the most entertaining opposite storyline of the Lana/Lashley thing.

Backstage:Sonya Deville asks Mandy to ask Otis if he can be ringside for her match. She alludes to Mandy using Otis.

Backstage:Sasha Banks is in the trainer’s room with an ice pack on her ankle. A “booker” isn’t happy that Sasha is backing out of another match, so he makes Bayley stand in her place against Lacey Evans tonight.

Match #3: Singles Match
SmackDown Woman’s Champion Bayley v Lacey Evans

Bayley isn’t happy about this match at all.

Michael Cole reads off Lacey’s military resume as the match starts. Pretty impressive way to get over as a face in the USA.

These two are the top of the SmackDown Woman’s Division and they’re showing it tonight. Great match here!

Match End: Lacey Evans hits the Woman’s Right and pins Bayley in the middle of the ring!

Backstage:Chad (I’ll never type his nickname) Gable is interviewed backstage about Sheamus. Of course Sheamus shows up and makes short jokes (this isn’t getting old yet?) until Gable takes a round out of him.

Backstage:Braun Strowman is interviewed. He says he’s in the Rumble match, but he’s here to challenge Shinsuke Nakamura for the Intercontinental Championship anywhere and anyplace.

Ladies and gentlemen….Elias
Elias is in the ring ready to cut up the roster to a tune…but he’s interrupted by Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, and Cesaro. They’re out here to give Braun an answer to his challenge….ABSOLUTELY NOT! Awesome promo as always from Sami Zayn here.

Sami apologizes to Elias and let’s him sing his song. Elias starts to sing trash about Sami so he sends Cesaro to beat Elias up.

Out comes Strowman to take everyone out (over the top rope of course since it’s Rumble time).

Fantastic video tribute to Rocky Johnson’s life. The WWE always does their best work looking back into their history. Rest in peace Rocky Johnson.

Match #4: Singles Match
Sonya Deville w/Mandy Rose v Alexa Bliss w/Nikki Cross

Before the match starts Heavy Machinery come out to ringside…kinda. They just stand at the bottom of the ramp and Otis makes noises toward Mandy.

Meanwhile Deville and Bliss are having a strong style match.

Mandy gets on the apron and is knocked back into the arms of Otis (aka happiest man alive)

Match End: Sonya is distracted and gets pinned. Alexa Bliss wins (but really, Otis won)

After the match Corey Graves made Michael Cole laugh so hard they had to cut his mic. Awesome.

Backstage:King Corbin and Dolph Ziggler are pumping up Robert Roode for his tables match.

Main Event: Tables Match
Robert Roode v Roman Reigns

Robert Roode attacks Roman as he walks down the ramp.

Roman puts himself through the barricade and then King Corbin comes out on his stupid chair before they cut to commercial.

After the break they tease a few moves through a table. Then they flip the over and set up for the next spot.

Corbin runs to the ring while Roman does his “Ooo ahhh” thing. Then Ziggler hits the worst super kick I’ve ever seen. They set Roman up on a table.

That brings out The Usos who quickly put Ziggler through the announce table with a cool double splash.

Back in the ring Roman oos and ahhs again.

Match End: Roman Reigns Spears Robert Roode through a table to win the match.

Roman gets to choose the stipulation for his match against King Corbin at Royal Rumble…he chooses Falls Count Anywhere.

I hope they battle into the room they store all the cheating devices the Astros used during the World Series (sorry Art).

Decent pace to the show tonight. More of that please!
