Alex Shelley, Kushida, and Time Splitters

Hello AW Universe,

It was announced on this past week’s episode of NXT that Kushida would be entering into the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic with his long-time NJPW partner, Alex Shelley, effectively reforming their tag team, Time Splitters.

Shelley and Kushida teamed for nearly three years, from the fall of 2012 to the fall of 2015 (at which point Shelley left NJPW), capturing the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship twice (Shelley also held the titles once with longtime tag partner Chris Sabin, as Motor City Machine Guns) and winning the 2012 Super Jr. Tag Tournament.

This will be Shelley’s first run with WWE, as he has wrestled mostly with Ring of Honor, where he’s a former ROH Tag Team Champion– with Sabin as Motor City Machine Guns– and Trios Tournament winner– with Abyss and Jimmy Rave– and TNA (now Impact) Wrestling, where he’s a former TNA World Tag Team Championship– again with Sabin– TNA X Division Champion, and X Division Tournament winner. He’s also wrestled in CZW, Smash Wrestling, and Pro Wrestling Zero1-Max, among others.

Shelley made his debut in ROH in the summer of 2003, just a month after his twentieth birthday, so though he is a grizzled 17-year vet in the business, at 37 Shelley is still in the prime of his career, and could very will be coming to NXT to have a decent run with the promotion that he has yet to have one in as of yet.
