The July 9, 2019 edition of SmackDown Live takes place from Manchester, N.H.
The show starts with a clip from “earlier today” where Dolph Ziggler is doing his usual woe is me shtick. Kevin Owens pulls up and calls him out for saying the same garbage all the time. Then they get into brawl.
The clip ends and cuts to Shane McMahon telling us that Kevin Owens was tossed from the building and the main event for tonight is cancelled.
Oh, but KO isn’t gone. He’s got a microphone and he’s “speaking the truth” ringside!
Kevin Owens is all of us!
If you didn’t watch and are using these notes as a recap so you don’t have to watch (you’re awesome for reading! Thank you!) please find a clip of Kevin going off about recent WWE events. It got this mark (yes we’re all marks) hook, line, and sinker.
Match #1: Intercontinental Champion Finn Bálor v Shinsuke Nakamura
I’ve been looking forward to this match since they teased it a few weeks ago and they didn’t dissapoint. Clearly working up to a title match. More please!
Match End: Nakamura wins via pin fall after a second Kinshasa.
More camera time for Shane McMahon and Drew McIntyre this time with Elias. Ziggler interjects and ends up getting a match against Roman Reigns in the main event.
Samoa Joe promo. Talks about beating up Kofi at Extreme Rules. The thing about Samoa Joe is that they build him up to win these title matches, but then he always loses.
Contract Signing for the WWE SmackDown Womans Championship match at Extreme Rules: Alexa Bliss is absent from this segment tonight just like she was last night at RAW. Nikki Cross represents them both here. We might have history here. The table didn’t get flipped and a brawl didn’t occur at a contract signing!
Another commercial for this EVOLVE 10th Anniversary show the WWE Network is airing. Still blows my mind a little. I really really hope they start using the network as a platform for indie promotions outside of the WWE.
Match #2: Nikki Cross v Carmella
Not the best match I’ve ever seen.
Match End: Nikki Cross gets the win via pin fall.
Clip recap of Asuka & Kari Sane v The IIconics from Japan where Asuka/Sane won a shot at the Womans Tag Titles. Paige (oh yeah she’s their manager…I forgot) challenges the IIconics, but their “sick” and can’t tonight. Maybe next week.
Why would they show a recap of the main event of RAW last night? It was absolute trash. Literally every second of it was terrible and without meaning. Roman has a short promo for tonight.
Time for the Tag Team Summit. Whatever that is. Should we put a timer on how long it takes for a brawl?
New Day got some pretty blue jokes in this segment. Don’t ask your parents what they were talking about.
Give Tucker and Otis more microphone time please. They have the gift of personality!
Match #3: Triple Threat Match
Daniel Bryan v Xavier Woods v Otis
Otis was the star of this match before it fell apart outside the ring. The ref kicks everyone else out of ringside and the match is restarted.
Otis is the star of the second half of this match as well. The crowd loves him!
Match End: Otis wins via pin fall over Woods.
Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville continue to bully Ember Moon backstage, but this time they challenge her to a tag team match next week.
Ali get another promo talking about how he doesn’t fear evil.
Poor booking note: Ali has a promo looking to fight evil and then they follow that promo with an Aleister Black looking for a fight segment.
Cesaro challenges Aleister Black at Extreme Rules! That’s going to be one hell of a match!
Downside to that match is I really thought it was going to be Bray Wyatt challenging him. We haven’t seen a Firefly Fun House in a few weeks. Not even a tease of puppets.
WWE Champion Kofi Kingston gets an interview about how he flipped off (sorry, “offered him and interesting hand gesture”) Samoa Joe last week.
Main Event: Roman Reigns v Dolph Ziggler w/Shane McMahon & Drew McIntyre & Elias
Before the match starts I just want to say how dissapointed I am that Elias was just wallpaper this week.
Of course Drew and Elias get involved behind the referee’s back.
Even with that Ziggler and Roman have a very decent main event match with many near falls.
Shane McMahon gets in the ring and Kevin Owens sneaks in and boom stunner!
Match End: Roman wins with a spear and a pin as the logo ending the show flashes on screen during the 3 count. Right to the wire.
SmackDown was WAY better than RAW this week by a wide margin. Hope they can keep this up next week.
