History Of The WWE 24/7 Title

A couple of months ago on an episode of Monday Night RAW, WWE Hall Of Famer Mick Foley made an appearance on the show and revealed the newest WWE Title known as The WWE 24/7 Title. Foley said that The WWE 24/7 Title will be open to Superstars from all the shows including Monday Night RAW, SmackDown LIVE, NXT, NXT UK & 205 Live. Foley also said that even WWE Legends & Fellow Hall Of Famers can show up anytime and win the title.

Foley also said that The WWE 24/7 Title will be able to change hands at any time, any place, as long as there is a referee present. Foley also said that falls will count anywhere, which is a similar rule to what The WWE Hardcore Title had. Foley then indicated that the latter part of Monday Night RAW and SmackDown LIVE each and every week will see the title be up for grabs.

According to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, one main reason why The WWE 24/7 Title was created is due to the continuous pressure from The USA Network. Officials from The USA Network have reportedly been complaining for some time now about the continuous drop in ratings of Monday Night RAW, particularly in the third hour. The USA Network has continually been pushing WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon to try and fix the third hour of Monday Night RAW as The 10-11PM time-slot of the show has always been the highest rated point, until recently.

The third hour of Monday Night RAW has been dropping so bad in ratings in recent weeks that WWE Officials have recognized that something was needed to be done. WWE’s first action was when they created The Wild Card Rule which allowed top Superstars from SmackDown LIVE to appear on Monday Night RAW each and every week and vice versa as WWE Officials also wanted to make sure that when SmackDown LIVE moves to FOX in October it doesn’t become a secondary show and ratings won’t plummet down.

Officials from The USA Network have reportedly also been sending WWE all sorts of ideas as of late, in an attempt to bring Monday Night RAW’s third-hour numbers up. One source close to the situation described the ideas as all terrible, but their best ideas was The 24/7 Title and Vince knew that he had to take one of them.

The WWE website wrote the following on The WWE 24/7 Title: “New title, new rules, new Raw? Seeking to bring the rawness back to the third hour of Raw, WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley introduced the 24/7 Championship, a new title that can be won or lost at any time, in any place, as long as there’s a referee present, with competition is open to all brands, including 205 Live, NXT and NXT UK. The idea, Foley said, was to reinforce the notion that a champion must eat, sleep and breathe the title if he wants to be worthy of the name.”
