News on a Dream Match Reportedly Scheduled for SummerSlam
Sunday, July 02, 2017
WWE is going to go all out this year when it comes to making SummerSlam a can't miss show. Fans have traditionally ranked the show as the second or third biggest show that the company puts on each year, and it seems that we may have a long-desired match coming to the event. It's been rumored now that the main event of Wrestlemania, Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns with the Universal Championship on the line, has been pushed forward to SummerSlam. It has also been rumored that Reigns could face Cena, or Cena could be fighting Jinder Mahal at the event. Ignore all that though, because one rumored match for the show is sure to top all of those matches.
On the Wrestling Observer Live radio show, a fan called in to ask co-host Bryan Alvarez when a match between Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles may be taking place. Alvarez had been teasing that a major dream match would be occurring at the Brooklyn event this year, but he did not not want to reveal it out of fear that plans would change. Alvarez reports that now AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura is likely going to be taking place at SummerSlam, and that those plans may be set in stone. This would be the second "dream match" for AJ Styles in a row at SummerSlam, after he wrestled and defeated John Cena at last year's event. Could Nakamura and Styles be coming our way this August?
It's clear that WWE knows that the fans want to see Nakamura vs. Styles at some point soon. The company had the two men briefly fight each other during the Money in the Bank ladder match last month, and the encounter between the two was applauded by many fans. AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura previously faced each other in a singles match for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 10 in 2016. The match has been regarded as a classic, and fans have been waiting for the two of them to have a rematch ever since they were both signed to WWE later on that year. SummerSlam takes place on August 20th of this year.
