POTENTIAL SPOILERS: Plans for Randy Orton & the WWE Championship
Thursday, May 18, 2017
If you have not enjoyed seeing Randy Orton as champion over the last few weeks, I recommend that you had better get used to it. From the sounds of things, Randy will be holding onto that title for a little while. The fine folks over at Sportskeeda have reported that Vince McMahon is very high on Orton due to his outstanding support for the company over the past 15 years. Randy Orton is looked at as the 'face of Smackdown' by WWE management, and is being groomed as a top star over on that brand. This is why winning the title from Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania was supposed to be a big moment for Randy.
As far as his current championship reign goes, it is being said that Orton will almost definitely defeat Jinder Mahal at Backlash this Sunday. It appears that the next challenger for the championship will be Rusev, and this match will probably take place at Money in the Bank next month. Randy could hold the belt until SummerSlam, and there's a good chance that he may hold it for even longer than that. Either way, Vince McMahon is very much loving Randy as champion right now. While plans are always subject to change in this company, don't expect to see him drop the title anytime soon.
WWE has been wanting to build Randy Orton as a top guy on Smackdown for a while. Vince McMahon apparently hand-picked Orton to win the Royal Rumble this year, and that call was made way before the pay-per-view had taken place. It's even being reported that they consider pushing both Orton and Roman Reigns a major priority. Orton himself has made headlines with his recent comments regarding the state of wrestling, and the topic has been a divisive one amongst the wrestling community. That doesn't appear to be stopping WWE from letting Orton have an extended run as the top star over on Smackdown.
