"Pretty Boy" Doug Somers Passes Away.
Tuesday, May 16, 2017
Former wrestler "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers passed away today at age 65. His cause of death was not announced. Somers was a mainstay in the AWA in the mid-80's. He, along with his tag team partner "Playboy" Buddy Rose and their manager "Sensational" Sherri Martell won the AWA Tag titles in May of 1986 from the young team of Scott hall and Curt Hennig. The team would go on to have a long feud with another young team of Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty, The Midnight Rockers. The teams fought each other for the rest of the year over the AWA tag team titles including a famous and very bloody cage match.
Somers started wrestling in the early 70s and was trained by Harley Race. His run with Rose in the AWA was his most famous. He remained with the AWA sporadically until 1990 when the company closed. He wrestled for both WCW and the WWF in the early 90's as well as part of the Global Wrestling Federation based in Dallas at the Sportatorium. Somers stayed connected to the business both as a wrestler and a manager before officially retiring in 2012, after working for several independent companies over the years.
We send our condolences to Somers' Family.
